At Radio Warehouse, our mission has always gone beyond simply selling radios. It is about ensuring that every device we put into the hands of our customers - whether for a construction site, a security team, or a frontline retail worker - is safe, reliable, and fully compliant with Australian standards.
Today, we are proud to announce a major milestone in that mission.
Radio Warehouse has officially signed the Equipment Safety Pledge, a new voluntary initiative launched by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). We join a select group of industry leaders - including eBay, Gumtree, and Icom Australia - in a united front to stop the sale of non-compliant and illegal radiocommunications devices in Australia.
What is the Equipment Safety Pledge?
As online shopping grows, so does the availability of "dodgy" devices. The ACMA has identified a rising trend of non-compliant equipment being sold through online platforms. These aren't just inferior products; they can be dangerous.
The Equipment Safety Pledge is a commitment to tackle this issue head-on. As a signatory, Radio Warehouse has voluntarily committed to a range of preventative and corrective actions designed to protect Australian spectrum and consumers.
By signing this pledge, we have formally agreed to:
- Proactively detect and prevent the sale of non-compliant and illegal devices.
- Cooperate closely with the ACMA, including removing any flagged non-compliant listings within two business days.
- Raise awareness among customers about the risks of illegal equipment.
- Empower consumers with clear pathways to report suspicious or "dodgy" devices.
The Real Cost of "Dodgy" Devices
Why does this matter? To the untrained eye, a cheap radio bought from an unregulated overseas seller might look just like a compliant one. However, the consequences of using these devices can be severe.
According to the ACMA, non-compliant devices - such as illegal mobile phone boosters, jammers, and non-approved two-way radios - risk causing serious interference. This interference can disrupt licensed communications networks, GPS navigation systems, and, most critically, emergency service communications.
As ACMA Deputy Chair Adam Suckling stated upon launching the pledge:
"Helping keep Australians safe from dodgy devices is a shared responsibility. These devices can interfere with emergency services like police, fire and ambulance, so sellers must step up to prevent these from being sold."
At Radio Warehouse, we refuse to let our customers take that risk. When you buy from us, you are buying equipment that has been rigorously vetted to ensure it plays by the rules and keeps the airwaves clear for everyone.
Leading the Industry
We are honoured to be one of the founding signatories of this pledge, standing alongside major global marketplaces and key manufacturers.
While large generalist platforms like eBay and Temu have signed on to police their third-party sellers, Radio Warehouse’s involvement highlights the critical role of specialist online two way radio dealers. We don't just host products; we understand them. Our team knows the difference between a compliant UHF radio and an illegal import that could shut down a local repeater.
This pledge formalises what we have practiced for years: a zero-tolerance policy for non-compliant gear.
Our Promise to You
We believe that safety is the ultimate feature. Whether you are upgrading your business communications or setting up a new fleet, you deserve the peace of mind that comes with compliant, legal equipment.
By signing the Equipment Safety Pledge, we are reaffirming our promise to you:
- Compliance Guarantee: Every product we stock meets the strict standards set by the Radiocommunications Act 1992 and other relevant legislation.
- Expert Guidance: We will continue to educate the market on why compliance matters, ensuring you never accidentally purchase equipment that could result in fines or safety hazards.
- Active Cooperation: We will work directly with the ACMA to stay ahead of emerging threats and trends in illegal equipment.
Looking Ahead
The airwaves are a shared public resource. Protecting them requires diligence, expertise, and integrity. We commend the ACMA for launching this vital initiative and invite other retailers to join us in making the Australian market safer for everyone.
